The critics attacked it, but it still had a monster first day. Now it looks like Michael Bay’s “Transformers 2″ will hit the $200 million mark in five days, just shy of “Dark Knight Returns” record $203 million in five days. I don’t know how to explain this, except… never underestimate the power of Optimus Prime!

you told me I was crazy when I said this would be the big movie of the summer. It may not have the legs to knock off Star Trek, but with an opening like this? It won’t take much.
I think Trek is pushing $250 mil, and remains in the top ten every weekend, so it should be the big movie of the summer, but it could be close.

follow up to my previous post:
not that I’m endorsing this thing. I haven’t seen it yet, but I fully expect it to suck.

This is why this movie makes so much money… tonight at class I asked my students if any of them had seen Transformers 2. One guy said that he had, declaring it an “awesome” movie full of explosions. Another guy said he was going to see it because Megan Fox is “hawt.” Three women said they saw it because they went with boyfriends to see it.

Are you saying this movie appeals to young men?

I know lots of younger generation people who love the movie as a spectacle however I don’t think it will be the Star Wars of this generation as postulated in your podcast.
I Think that title should go to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
