Wired has an interesting piece on the the 12 year development and eventual failure of Duke Nukem Forever, AKA the greatest piece of vaporware ever in computer gaming.
A really interesting read, the story details the amazing rise and eventual self destruction of Apogee/3D realms, the developer of the Duke Nukem series. It sounds like the game was actually pretty close to completion, and that if the powers that be wanted it could be released fairly soon. But that also sounds pretty unlikely at this point.

Boys with toys… I never get tired of reading about this kind of self-destruction! For a longer, more detailed narrative involving the same kind of thing, pick up a copy of “Masters of Doom” by David Kushner.
I’m starting to thing that videogame designers simply should not be allowed to be their own producers/bosses.
