I have always been a sucker for Boba Fett. Thirty-two years ago the infamous bounty hunter in Mandalorian armor made his debut in the Star Wars Holiday Special. By the time The Empire Strikes Back came around, he was a full-fledged minor character with a handful of lines. And fans loved him.
Last month, Dark Horse Books released Star Wars Omnibus: Boba Fett. It collects nine great Boba Fett stories (almost 500 pages!) into one easy to lug around book. The colors look (mostly) great, and the lettering is sharp and easy to read. The book is smaller than the standard comic– it’s 6 by 9 inches. Personally, I like the size and find it easy to stash in a bag when I’m not reading it.
There are no new stories here– the Omnibus collects and reprints old favorites. Fett is the star of just about all the stories, though he shares the spotlight with Han, Lando and Chewie in “Underworld: The Yavin Vassilika.” The stories avoid trying to tell us too much about Fett’s past– they just show us why he is considered the best bounty hunter in the galaxy. For the Star Wars fan who likes to engage in the “if X fought Y, who would win?” debates… the collection kicks off with Fett versus Vader, mano a mano, in “Boba Fett: Enemy of the Empire.”
I heartily recommend this book for anybody who is a fan of Boba Fett as portrayed in the comics. With a retail price of $24.99, I think it is a very good bargain for the number of stories you get. My only complaint, and it is a small one, is this: some of the colors in “Boba Fett: Death, Lies and Trickery” seem a little washed out. I remember the artist, Cam Kennedy, using very moody colors in his “Dark Empire” work. But I think the transfer on this story fades the color out a little bit. I’ll have to go find an original and check, but compared to the rest of the vibrant colors in the Omnibus, it sticks out as “blah” to the casual eye.
Star Wars Omnibus: Boba Fett is available now at your favorite book store and online retailers.
