It’s true… Dark Horse Comics is ending the popular “Star Wars:  Legacy” title.  The final issue, #50,  should hit the stores in July, 2010.

Dark Horse released a statement earlier today explaining that all good things must come to an end, and it was a hard decision to end the title.  There is no indication that sales were poor, or that the story/art was in decline… Dark Horse simply appears to have decided to quit while they were ahead.  A decision I often wish television producers here in the United States would consider!

Star Wars:  Legacy first saw print in 2006 and chronicles the adventures of Cade Skywalker, a decendant of Luke Skywalker who operates in a galaxy where the Sith have returned, the Imperial Remnant is now in power, and the Jedi once again find themselves on the short end of things.  I’ve read the series since issue #1, and I very much enjoyed the stories by John Ostrander and art by Jan Duursema.  Fans seemed to like it, too… Cade Skywalker was popular enough to earn his own action figure, sold in a two-pack with the Twi’lek Sith Darth Talon.  (Although, most fanboys probably were more interested in the fact that Darth Talon was a nubile female Twi’lek wearing little more than a bikini and tattoos…)

The future of Star Wars at Dark Horse appears strong, so fans should not fret too much.  Dark Horse Comics will still be producing “Star Wars Adventures,”  “Star Wars:  The Clone Wars,”  “Star Wars: Invasion,”   and the upcoming “Star Wars:  Knight Errant” and “Star Wars:  The Old Republic.”

If you haven’t had a chance to read any of the “Legacy” series, most are available in trade paperback at your local comic book store or via any online retailer such as www.tfaw.com .

I believe Dark Horse does very well with Legacy, but like you said, all good things need to come to an end. I am just going to guess and say I bet there are some new titles in the works. Some franchises want to squeeze every penny from fans by having a half dozen titles running at the same time (i.e. Batman) so I am glad they are willing to step aside and let some new series start…or at least let me save up a little for some TPBs.

They ran the Conan series for 50 issues, stopped and then started it up again (with the new title Conan the Cimmerian. I think it might be a better strategy when switching out creative teams than to just do it within one month like they used to do back in the day on most marvel and DC titles. So maybe they will start this up again before too long?

I think John nailed it… they have the “Knight Errant” series coming out soon, and it is not a great idea to have too many titles out there that appeal to the same audience. I remember there being at least five or six X-books (X-men, X-Force, Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, etc.) out at one time. It made it hard for me to get that excited about them.

But I hope we haven’t seen the last of this series… maybe a holiday special?
