We’re are up against it.  Lost has only 2 episodes left, and even though that equates to three and a half hours, a few things are now crystal clear.

We simply won’t be getting answers to a lot of our questions.

Of course we have known this for a while now.  In their final podcast, the Lost producers indicated that we are pretty much done with the Island’s historical mythology, and will focus on main characters the rest of the way.  That is good, but a consequence is that we can’t get to some of the big answers we may want.

Now, there will still be Lost: The final Journey, and also the commentaries on the DVD/BluRays, and maybe these will solve some mysteries.  But Damon and Carlton have made it clear they will be “going dark” after the finale, and won’t be dishing on unanswered questions.

So… Here are a few of my big questions from Lost that I expect won’t be answered.

What is the deal with Walt? Walt is special and he appears to have some unique abilities.  He is also the only apparition we have seen on the island that wasn’t a dead person, at least that we know of.  I suspect there won’t be any explanation of it.  Is it a deal breaker?  Probably not, but they spent so much time with Walt early on that some clarification would be nice.

What is up with pregnancy? This was a big deal for a long time on the show.  Claire was given treatments so she would be OK and deliver.  Sun had to get off the island or she probably would have died.  The others brought Juliette to the island to figure this out.  Maybe it was all a ploy by the “man in black” as part of his plan, but now we may never know.

The rules.  Ben talks about the rules, Charles talks about the rules, Jacob and MIB talk about the rules.  Everyone spends a lot of time talking about the rules, but we really don’t know much about them.  Are they hard and fast “laws” like the law of gravity, that can’t be broken?  Or are they more like guidelines?  Do they need to exist, or are they just the whim of Jacob or MIB, or something else?  Are they the same thing that keeps Michael and Richard from killing themselves, and keeps Jack from blowing up?  These questions sort of go to the core mythology of “what is really going on here?” which I’m fearful that we won’t ever get to know.

The numbers. Don’t get me started on this one.  I know this is a big deal for some people  (ehem, MIKE), but for me, I don’t need any more on this.  I’m OK with the concept that there are mystical elements of the show that won’t ever get explained.  The numbers fall into that category for me.

Those are the big ones that come to mind quickly.  Of course there are tons more little ones, like how do the Dharma food drops keep coming years after the Dharma Initiative is disbanded (maybe it has something to do with the strange time shifting aura surrounding the island?) but I digress.

What do you think?  What are the big questions that you don’t think you will get answered, and how does that impact your feelings about the show?

I agree with you on a couple of these…

I don’t think we will ever figure out what the fuss was over Walt. I think early on he was probably thought of as a “candidate.” But the simple fact that the kid playing Walt aged 9 very obvious years made it tough to work him back into the story.

I don’t think they will give some huge answer about the numbers… I’ve decided to be satisfied that they simply represent the final six candidates.

I do think that they might try to explain the rules by the end… I have a feeling that Jacob made up the rules as part of an elaborate “game” with the MIB. After watching last week’s episode, the scene that really stood out was the one with young Jacob and his brother playing the game– the brother tells Jacob that one day Jacob can make up his own game and everybody will have to follow his rules. I think that is what we are seeing now… Jacob’s elaborate game with the MIB, testing candidates to serve as protector of the island, with the MIB getting to leave if the candidates all fail or refuse the job.

As for the pregnancy prohibition… is there any evidence of ANYBODY other than Ethan Rom being conceived and born on the island? I’m starting to wonder if the Ethan thing was a mistake, that he wasn’t supposed to have been conceived there. If he had not been, then the pregnancy thing can be explained away as a side effect of the island’s mysterious healing ability… the body “heals” the pregnancy.

Maybe my last hope for illumination is the entire connection to Egypt. The boys are playing an ancient Egyptian game. There is the huge statue of Taweret. Fill me in!

I thought the numbers were “degrees” on the circle in the lighthouse, representing the six. I feel that question has been answered…though we don’t know much about the lighthouse…and, of course, why?

The numbers do represent candidates, and they are on the lighthouse wheel, and they were being broadcast out over the pacific, and were stamped on the hatch, and needed to be entered in to the computer to push the button, and… well it keeps going. The numbers are all over the place.

There is no concrete definitive explanation for all the occurrences of the numbers.

As I said, I just chalk them up to the ‘mystical nature of the island” and I’m done. but I know several people who have said that they need some explanation beyond what we have seen. Sorry to say, it aint comin’…
