THUNDERCATS ARE LOOSE!

The Cartoon Network recently announced it is developing a new ThunderCats television series, based upon the 1985-1990 series that followed the battle between Lion-O and Mumm-Ra (The Ever-living!) on the planet Plun-Darr.  Warner Brothers Animation is looking to team with a Japanese animation studio, Studio 4C, to give the series a fresh “anime” look.

Studio 4C, if you have never heard of them, was behind “The Animatrix” and “Gotham Knights.”  I’d expect a darker, more adult take on the Cats.

ThunderCats always had a nice blend of swordplay, magic, science and martial arts.  An updated series could be great fun.  Will it be any good?

I watched the original as a youngster. Probably one of the better 1980s cartoons (although I haven’t seen it since, so could be terrible) from that group that were shameless toy sellers; it seemed to carry a bit more of a message and had some genuine menace; even if Mumm-Ra was usually defeated by his own appearance.

There’s a website with audio samples with the voice cast swearing and saying all sorts of inappropriate things – it’s very funny, I’ll try and find the link.

I wonder if “Thundercats! Ho!” is outdated now.
