Back in October 2009 we discussed the idea of zombies in the Star Wars universe. “Death Troopers” was a pretty good book that threw a little horror genre into the world of Star Wars.
“Night of the Living Trekkies” by Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall is an over-the-top, unofficial novel about zombies and Star Trek. The premise is simple: what happens if zombies invade a Star Trek convention? What happens is a fun to read tale of adventure, zombies, and TONS of Star Trek trivia, inside jokes, and even a little Star Wars thrown in for good measure. The story follows a hero named Jim Pike, an assistant hotel manager, as he simply tries to survive and save his convention-attending sister.
As a fan of Star Trek, I absolutely loved all the references to old episodes, arguments about whether the Star Trek animated series is canon, random moments when characters suddenly start spouting facts about episodes of Deep Space 9… you get the idea. You cannot take the book too seriously– it is light-hearted pulp, but it is well-written pulp.
This novel is the first published book from Kevin David Anderson (not to be confused with Star Wars genre writer Kevin J. Anderson) and veteran writer Sam Stall. I think the novel stands on its own– no need for a sequel. But I think it could be turned into a very funny, and violent, movie. I’ve included a trailer made to promote the book at the end of this story, and I think it gives you an idea of its potential.
The novel is available at bookstores and online. I suggest you add it to your reading list for 2011!
