Re: Comic book characters not in the comic books – No, it doesn’t make you assholes to not want them. Why waste time making me like or hate some unknown character when the X-Men universe is so laden with rich, under-used characters?? It’s not like the movies really follow comic book continuity, so why are they worried about aging up some X-Men to put them in the Xavier/Magneto movie? Cyclops is dead, if we go by the movies – which real comic book fans do not. Why not add in Moira Kelly or Captain Britain? Wolverine could have been alive hundreds of years, hello! Emma Frost? It’s been ages since I’ve been deep into X-Men and I came up with 4 possible characters – try harder with the characters you have, Marvel!

Re: “Black Panther” – I wouldn’t be so quick to write off a movie based on a black super-hero, especially if the movie is done well. “Blade” was also based on a comic book, and it was initially successful because of the strength of its black audience. The good word of mouth spread from there and helped make a modest franchise of the character.

I think “Dawson’s Creek” made people hate Spielburg. ~_^

I can’t be objective about the Harry Potter series. I was a huge fan of the story until the last book, which is nothing but author fatigue, laziness and bloat at work. I won’t be seeing Deathly Hallows until I can see it in a way that benefits no one. Yes, I’m that bittercakes. ^_^

Young women read “Earthsea” still! And Miyazaki’s latest anime epic is based on it, although I’m sure it wildly diverges from the story.

As a female, I think I’m genetically wired to not care about “Planet of the Apes” movies. Heh.

Re: Captain America – I actually think that spending the whole movie in WWII – which is what I’ve read about it – is a mistake. I think the teens who go to movies repeatedly, which is how movies like CapA make serious money, will not relate well to a WWII setting. Maybe I’ll be wrong, but we’ll see.

Re: Twilight movies. There are 4 books, and yes, I heard the same thing about the last book being broken into two films, so there will be a total of 5 films. And probably 6 if they can figure out how to film the related short story book. Just in case I’m your only female listener, you have my permission to skip anything and everything about Twilight. ~_^

Re: SciFi channel – Oh, gawd, how I hate the direction Siffy has taken! Not only is there a cooking show on the network, but the “celebrity” chef is one of the most unlikable personalities I’ve ever seen on Top Chef. I’m a huge TC fan, but I won’t be watching Marcel make foam out of various foods week after week. No way.

    Thanks, guys!

Lore, believe it or not, you aren’t our only female listener. But either way we’re going to take your your permission to ignore twilight and run with it.

unless we decide to razz Mike about it.

    Thanks for the insightful comments!

I think all the Sci-Guys should go see the next Twilight movie together. You’ve never really experienced a movie like Twilight unless you are one of ten guys in the theater on opening night, and suddenly realize that both moms and tweens are sighing at the sight of a shirtless Jacob.

If we take the comic book adaptations out of the equation, there aren’t that many SciFi films on the horizon. I’m optimistic for Battle: Los Angeles, and Cowboys And Aliens but both are walking the tightrope of “Could rock, could be terrible”.

The Adjustment Bureau sounded good on paper, but the trailer makes it look awful, really bad. I’m not surprised it’s been delayed.

I think I’m most interested in Thor and Captain America in terms of how they’ll impact upon The Avengers. If they tank, what happens to the latter film? In some respects, I’d love to see Marvel bring all of these characters together after appearing in different films hasn’t been done before on the big screen (to the best of my knowledge), but Favreau’s comments about Marvel “not knowing where they’re going to be” that resulted in him jumping ship from Iron Man is a really telling, and worrying, statement.

X-Men: First Class — they may not be calling it a reboot, but it clearly is, and I think the characters they’re using is because they’re trying to force it into the continuity of the existing films, when the timeline doesn’t work at all. To not have the original team (isn’t there a First Class comic that does just that?) is just ludicrous. Lore may like to know that Emma Frost is in it, as is (I believe) Sebastian shaw.

One you missed: Source Code, directed by Duncan Jones.

Kick-Ass did pretty well relative to its budget, Jim. It grossed $90M worldwide from a $30M budget, according to the very reliable Wikipedia.

I really like the idea of a commentary, but I think the best films to do are those that have easy things to poke fun at, but that you also have affection for.

Jim, I do believe it, but I had to take the shot anyway because…it’s Twilight. I like Mike’s suggestion, though. It would be a short podcast because you would all still be shell-shocked by the sparkling! *snicker*

Martin – Good to know about Emma Frost. I did a little more reading about it and now understand Wolverine IS going to be in it, as well as many of the other original X-men – timelines be damned!

Sorry I was so chatty last time, but I tend to do mindless work while I listen and like the break of coming back to the window to comment. You have my email if you’d like to send a STFU note. ~_^
