Some discussion in another blog post reminded me that I had neglected to select a Sci-Crush for July. Without further ado, here she is: Hayley Atwell.
OK, most people in the US haven’t had a broad exposure to Ms. Atwell yet. But as soon as the Captain America movie hits theaters, I expect her name to get a little more “buzz.” Born in London, she actually has dual UK/US citizenship. She started her career in the UK and has appeared on television, in the theater, and even on radio (Doctor Who, no less!). Prior genre work includes the AMC remake of “The Prisoner.”
In Captain America, Ms. Atwell will be playing the role of Peggy Carter. Fans of the comic book might recall that Peggy Carter is the aunt of Sharon Carter– an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. with whom Cap has had a romantic relationship. Promotional literature for the movie indicates that Peggy Carter fights with the French Resistance… when she isn’t busy groping Captain America’s pectoral muscles.
I can’t imagine that this role will require a lot of acting range… she’s probably there to look pretty, quip clever things at Captain America, and eventually fall in love with him. But, this role will guarantee that she is seen by millions of US moviegoers and undoubtedly lead to future film roles. I think it is a smart career move for her. Almost as smart as being the Sci-Guys Sci-Crush for July, 2011!
Captain America: The First Avenger hits US theaters on July 22nd. UK fans will have to wait until July 29th. If you live in Turkey… September 2, 2011.
