Engadget reports today that in just over a month, Nintendo will slash the $249.00 price tag for the handheld 3DS system to $169.00 (with similar price cuts in other world markets). This is a significant cut (and brings the price to the same as the better selling DSi-XL). Despite the 3DS’s power and impressive graphics, it hasn’t had the titles to move enough early adopters.
And what about those early adopters? Nintendo hasn’t turned their backs on them. Twenty FREE games will be available for download for those that register their systems within the next couple weeks. (These will be Virtual Console games from GBA and NES systems… no doubt with some 3D zing). Without knowing what the titles are, it is hard to predict if the $80 is worth it… but let’s hope for some hints before Aug. 12.

Wow to both parts of this news… Nice price drop, and very nice gesture to early adopters. But I would expect good things from Nintendo.
