I skipped commenting on the last few, as I saw there were comments, which is happy-making. We listened to all of them in mid-June on a car trip, and enjoyed them!

We finally went to see this one based on your discussion, and I always find it interesting what your discussions magnify and diminish. For example, I kept dreading the part when he lost the power and kept thinking it would happen much sooner in the film, but it really only encompassed the last 20 minutes or so. I think my Big Problem with the movie is that we know nothing about the aliens and what they want. We know they’re intelligent and capable of pulling off a spy program, but why do they want the planet? Assuming, and letting us assume it was either the generic terra-forming or resources grab seems lazy.

Anyway, after we saw it, we were cornered by a man who had seen the film a few too many times. We stood around the theater hall trading theories (he led us to try theories like an English teacher or something) loudly and way too long, but there has to be something about a film that can cause a man to see it repeatedly and corner strangers, right?

Anyway, we wouldn’t have seen it without your discussion, and we don’t regret it. Emily Blunt with arm guns was worth the price of admission. ~_^

It would have been nice to know a bit more about the aliens, but many recent films seem to gloss this over and stick with “the human drama.” I think Battle for Los Angeles and Battleship both ignore alien motivation? Well, Battleship pretty much ignores a plot…

I agree, there’s been a lot of hand-waving when it comes to alien motivation. Thing is, if i wanted to see “the human drama”, I’d watch a Meryl Streep film. Here’s to a loud call for Alien Drama Development in films with aliens in them!
